Fresh Start Sticks Blog #3
When you decide to pack up your life and move your family abroad, the world is technically your oyster. You could choose the beaches of Spain, the countryside of France, or the familiar expat tracks of Portugal.
When we told people our dart landed on Bulgaria, the reaction was almost universal: “Wait, why Bulgaria?”
It’s a fair question. Bulgaria doesn’t get the massive PR campaigns that Western European destinations do. But for an ordinary UK family looking to drastically improve their quality of life, that’s exactly its superpower. It is Europe’s best-kept secret.
After months of spreadsheets, soul-searching, and reality-checking, here are the four non-negotiable reasons we chose Bulgaria over everywhere else.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: money. In the UK, we felt like we were working just to pay for the right to go to work. High council tax, astronomical energy bills, and the sheer cost of basic groceries meant our “disposable income” was practically non-existent.
Bulgaria operates on a completely different economic scale. Even with the country’s recent official transition to the Euro, the cost of living remains roughly 40% to 50% lower than the UK.

In the UK, the housing market feels like a rigged game. A modest family home with a garden often requires a multi-decade mortgage that chains you to your job.
In Bulgaria, we realized we could actually own our lives. Whether you look at rural houses with massive plots of land near historical hubs like Veliko Tarnovo, modern apartments in the coastal cities of Varna and Burgas, or mountain chalets in Bansko, your money buys tangible freedom.
The Reality Check: You can still buy a spacious, solid country house with an acre of land—ripe for a beautiful renovation and a self-sufficient vegetable garden—for less than the price of an average UK garage or a standard car loan.
We didn’t want our kids growing up glued to screens because it was too miserable, rainy, or unsafe to go outside. Bulgaria’s geography and climate are spectacular, boasting four distinct and dramatic seasons:
Our weekends went from walking around crowded, damp UK shopping centers to choosing between a beach day, a mountain trek, or exploring ancient Roman ruins.
This is the hardest point to quantify on a spreadsheet, but it’s the one we feel the most every single day. Bulgaria still retains a beautiful, slow, traditional rhythm.
Food is fresh, seasonal, and hyper-local. People still grow their own tomatoes, make their own wine, and take pride in hospitality. There is an safety here that feels like stepping back into the 1980s. You see kids playing unsupervised in village squares, walking home from school together, and just being unburdened by the heavy, hyper-anxious atmosphere that has crept into British suburban life.
When we looked at the hard facts side-by-side, the choice became glaringly obvious:
| The UK Lifestyle | Our Bulgaria Choice |
| Taxes: High progressive income tax + heavy council tax. | Taxes: 10% flat income tax + negligible local property rates. |
| Pace: Fast, rushed, high-stress “hustle” culture. | Pace: Aylak (a wonderful Bulgarian word for doing things at a relaxed, unhurried pace). |
| Housing: Massive debt for a small footprint. | Housing: Affordable space, land, and early ownership potential. |
| Childhood: Highly managed, screen-heavy, weather-restricted. | Childhood: Outdoors, safe, multi-season adventure. |
Bulgaria isn’t a perfect utopia. The roads can be rough, the language barrier is real, and the bureaucracy takes patience. If you move here expecting a carbon copy of the UK but with cheaper prices, you’ll struggle.
But if you are willing to adapt, respect the local culture, and trade the predictable grind for a bit of adventure, it offers a quality of family life that we simply couldn’t find or afford anywhere else in Europe.
We didn’t just choose a new country; we chose a completely different future for our children.
In our next post, we’re taking you along on our scouting trip. We’ll show you exactly how we chose our specific region, what our first 48 hours on the ground felt like, and how to plan a trip to see if Bulgaria is right for your family. Don’t forget to subscribe!
