How We Turn Everyday Experiences Into New Opportunities

One of the biggest changes we’ve noticed since moving abroad isn’t just where we live.

It’s how we look at things.

When you start again in a new country, almost everything feels different. The places, the people, the businesses, the way things work and even the experiences you have each day can make you stop and think.

And we’ve learned to pay attention to that.

Because an experience doesn’t have to be something you simply enjoy and move on from.

Sometimes, it can reveal an idea.

Sometimes, it can introduce you to a person.

Sometimes, it can show you a gap in the market.

And sometimes, it can completely change the direction you’re heading in.

Learning to Look Differently

Before we moved abroad, we were already business-minded.

We’ve built businesses in different industries throughout our lives, so looking for opportunities isn’t necessarily something new to us.

But our surroundings have changed.

And that has changed what we notice.

Take something as simple as going somewhere for the day.

We might experience a service, speak to a business owner, see how a company operates or discover something that works incredibly well.

Instead of simply thinking, “That was great,” we might also ask:

“Why does this work?”

“Who is providing this?”

“Is there demand for it?”

“Could something similar work somewhere else?”

“What problem is this business solving?”

Those questions can turn an ordinary experience into a learning opportunity.

Experiences Can Introduce You to Industries

Living abroad has exposed us to industries and businesses that weren’t necessarily part of our everyday life before.

Tourism.

Property.

Hospitality.

Transportation.

Boat excursions.

Luxury services.

International businesses.

Each experience gives us another little piece of information.

We’re not saying every experience needs to become a business idea.

That’s not the point.

The point is to become more observant.

When you’re curious about how things work, you start learning everywhere you go.

A boat trip can teach you something about tourism.

A VIP transfer can show you how premium customer service works.

A conversation with a property owner can reveal something about the local market.

A meal at a restaurant can make you think about branding, presentation and customer experience.

You start seeing the business behind the experience.

Don’t Just Consume—Understand

This is probably one of the biggest mindset changes we’ve made.

We still want to enjoy life.

We still want to go exploring.

We still want to experience new places with our family.

But we’re learning not to simply consume experiences.

We try to understand them.

What makes this place successful?

Why are people attracted to it?

Who is the customer?

What problem is being solved?

What could be improved?

Could there be an opportunity here?

You don’t need to be constantly looking for your next business.

You simply need to start looking at the world with curiosity.

Opportunity Doesn’t Always Look Like Opportunity

Sometimes an opportunity doesn’t arrive with a sign saying “THIS IS YOUR NEXT BUSINESS.”

It can look like a conversation.

A recommendation.

A problem someone mentions.

A service that doesn’t exist.

A business doing something differently.

A person you meet while travelling.

Or even something that frustrates you.

We’ve learned that problems can be particularly interesting.

If something is difficult, expensive, inconvenient or unnecessarily complicated, there may be a reason why.

And sometimes that reason is an opportunity for someone willing to find a better solution.

Our Fresh Start Has Changed Our Thinking

Moving abroad gave us the physical space to reset.

But it also gave us mental space.

We stopped simply following the path we had been on and started asking what else might be possible.

Now, whether we’re travelling, meeting people, exploring a new part of Türkiye or simply experiencing everyday family life, we’re constantly learning.

We’re observing.

We’re asking questions.

We’re connecting the dots.

And sometimes those dots lead somewhere unexpected.

You Can Do This Wherever You Live

You don’t have to move abroad to develop this mindset.

Start where you are.

Next time you visit a successful business, ask yourself what makes it work.

When you use a service you love, think about why you enjoyed the experience.

When someone complains about a problem, listen to what they’re actually saying.

When you discover something missing, don’t immediately dismiss it.

And when you meet someone doing something interesting, start a conversation.

You never know what you might learn.

Your Next Opportunity Could Be Hiding in Plain Sight

We’re still figuring out where our own journey will take us.

That’s part of the excitement.

Our move abroad didn’t give us a guaranteed roadmap.

It gave us the freedom to explore.

And we’re learning that opportunities aren’t always found by sitting down and searching for them.

Sometimes they’re found by living differently, experiencing more and paying attention.

That’s how we’re learning to approach our new life.

We’re not just travelling through places.

We’re not just consuming experiences.

We’re watching, learning, connecting and looking for possibilities.

Because your next opportunity might not be waiting somewhere far away.

It might already be sitting right in front of you.

You just have to learn to see it.
